Elections Commission Marks Voters’ Day 2026 With Focus on Voting Rights and Responsibilities

The Elections Commission has marked Voters’ Day 2026, observed annually on August 25, with a series of activities aimed at promoting public participation in the democratic process and raising awareness of voters’ rights and responsibilities.
The commission stated Voters’ Day seeks to increase public participation in democracy, strengthen confidence in the electoral system and provide citizens with information on elections and democratic processes. This year’s theme is “Voting is a Right and a Responsibility.”

The commission reported voting is a fundamental right guaranteed to every Maldivian under the Constitution and described it as a responsibility through which citizens can contribute to determining the country’s future.
It encouraged voters to consider candidates’ integrity and competence, as well as their commitment to the religion and nation, rather than making electoral choices based solely on short-term benefits.
The Elections Commission began marking Voters’ Day following a decision to establish the observance in 2015, after the commission held a Democracy Week in Haa Alif Hoarafushi.
The commission mentioned it has placed significant importance on increasing voter participation and has marked Voters’ Day through various activities over the past three years.
As part of this year’s observance, the commission is conducting several activities, including a special podcast featuring remarks from commission members on the importance of Voters’ Day, to be aired through state media Public Service Media (PSM).
It will discuss why Voters’ Day is observed, the importance of voting and voters’ rights and responsibilities.
The commission also plans to share information about Voters’ Day with the public through social media, along with relevant statistics and video clips.
The Elections Commission highlighted the activities are intended to improve public awareness of the electoral process and encourage greater participation in elections.
