The Ministry of Environment has affirmed its decision not to waive the MVR 69.4 million fine imposed on AFCONS for the damage caused to the Villimale’ reef by the bridge platform, in an official statement released today.

Following an investigation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the agency issued a penalty of MVR 69.4 million.

Environment Ministry provided detailed insights into the investigation, revealing that the report by its legal team was concluded in January. Additionally, maritime technical advice was received on July 23, following a request made in May.

The investigation findings highlighted, according to the ministry, that the company had sufficient opportunity to take preventive measures to avoid such incidents. Consequently, it was determined that the fine would not be modified based on this reasoning.

Furthermore, the Environment Ministry announced that MVR 15 million from the fine would be allocated to the Environmental Restoration Fund.
