Eva’s Case Scheduled for Tomorrow

MV+ News Desk | June 12, 2023

The Parliament secretariat has officially informed that the no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla will be included in tomorrow’s session’s agenda.

The motion, which was signed by 50 lawmakers, had a 14-day notice period, and it expired today.

However, due to the party’s failure to reach a consensus on the formation of standing committees after 13 of its members defected, the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) petition to remove Eva encountered a delay.

The no-confidence motion against Eva can only proceed if the general committee of parliament schedules a specific time for it.

Despite repeated requests from the MDP’s parliamentary group to prioritize Eva’s case according to the rules, the matter was not included in today’s meeting’s agenda. Consequently, MDP members expressed their dissatisfaction by shouting slogans and disrupting the Majlis proceedings, asserting that no further business could proceed until the matter was addressed.
