Expat Workers to Receive Salaries Through Banks, as per New Rule

Employers in the Maldives will be required to deposit expatriate workers’ salaries directly into bank accounts held in their names under a new regulatory amendment.

The Ministry of Homeland Security gazetted the third amendment to the Regulation on the Employment of Expatriates on Tuesday.

Under the amendment, salaries payable through employment agreements must be deposited into accounts opened in the employees’ names at banks registered with or authorised by the Maldives Monetary Authority.

The requirement will take effect 30 days after the amendment was gazetted. The measure introduces a formal banking requirement for salary payments to expatriate workers across the country.

The amended regulation also provides an avenue for undocumented expatriates, or those without valid documents, to regularise their status.
