The harbour development project in Eydhafushi, Baa Atoll, has reached 54 per cent completion, according to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
The project is aimed at expanding and upgrading the island’s harbour, which serves as a key commercial hub for Baa Atoll and handles vessels travelling to and from neighbouring islands.

MTCC said capping concrete works are currently in progress as construction continues.
The development includes the reclamation of 28,304 cubic metres of land, dredging of 3,354 cubic metres of the harbour channel, construction of 402 metres of inner embankment and 170 metres of outer embankment, as well as the installation of 383 metres of revetment.
The project also involves the construction of an 11-metre by 11-metre ramp, an 18-metre-wide pier, pavement works covering 1,814 square metres, port lighting and a mooring system.
The total cost of the project is USD 4.2 million.
The harbour has experienced growing demand in recent years due to increased development on the island and rising maritime activity, resulting in congestion that the expansion is intended to ease.
The original Eydhafushi harbour was built in 1995 and was recognised as the largest harbour constructed on an inhabited island in the Maldives at the time. The current project is expected to improve capacity and support the island’s expanding transport and commercial needs.
