FDC Spends MVR 13.5M Clearing Illegally Dumped Waste Near Hulhumale’ Amaan Towers

The Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) spent MVR 13.5 million over nine months to clear 5,040 tonnes of waste dumped in public areas surrounding Amaan Towers in Hulhumalé Phase 2.

FDC said the waste was cleared between October 2025 and June 2026, following the handover of the corporation’s towers in the area and the subsequent movement of residents into the flats.

The corporation said illegal dumping intensified as residents began moving into the towers, with large quantities of bulky waste accumulating around several buildings. The buildup prompted public criticism, particularly on social media.

FDC said it responded by carrying out cleanup operations and warning that individuals who dumped waste would be fined. The corporation also confirmed that fines had been issued to some offenders.

According to figures released by FDC today, 3,178 tonnes of waste were cleared between October 2025 and March 2026, while a further 1,862 tonnes were removed in May and June. FDC estimates that one tonne of waste is equivalent to approximately 133 garbage bags.

The corporation spent MVR 8.45 million on waste disposal between October and March, followed by MVR 75,100 in April and MVR 4.95 million during May and June.

FDC said the high cost was driven by the dumping of different types of waste in public areas in violation of established regulations.

The corporation said illegal dumping has increased the financial burden on both the state and FDC, as additional resources are required to clear and maintain public spaces.

Despite FDC’s cleanup efforts and enforcement measures, illegal dumping around the towers continues, according to the corporation.
