FDC to Use CCTV to Identify and Fine Illegal Waste Dumpers in Hulhumalé

Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) has warned that CCTV cameras will be used to identify people illegally dumping waste near its flats in Hulhumalé Phase 2, with offenders facing enforcement action and fines.

FDC Deputy Managing Director Ibrahim Razan said offenders will be identified through surveillance cameras installed at the lower levels of the flats and will face enforcement action and fines once the system becomes operational.

Razan made the remarks during an activity held under the joint program by FDC and Housing Development Corporation’s (HDC) Madhirin Rakkaa programme to clear accumulated waste from the area near Fahi Towers.

He said the cleanup is necessary to protect the health and safety of residents and that FDC plans to transform the area into a cleaner and more pleasant public space after removing the accumulated waste.

FDC said camera systems have already been installed at the lower levels of the flats, with testing currently underway. Once the system becomes operational, the corporation will use the footage to identify people dumping waste illegally.

Razan said details of identified offenders would be shared with Hulhumalé Police and HDC for further legal action. He also urged members of the public to report instances of illegal dumping through the FDC portal or its dedicated hotline.

FDC said 5,040 tonnes of waste have been removed from the area since October last year, at a cost of MVR 13.5 million. Of this, MVR 4.9 million was spent in May and June alone.

Following the cleanup, FDC plans to pave the area and develop green spaces for public use. The corporation said the success of the initiative will depend on residents and the wider public helping to keep the area clean.

FDC also plans to share information related to waste management and the initiative through the Viber groups used by residents of the Fahi flats.
