Minister of Housing, Land, and Urban Development, Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed, announced that the final list of flats under the Gedhoruveriyaa Housing Scheme will be released in October.

Housing Ministry officials appeared before the Parliament’s Petitions Committee to address a petition requesting that the previously gazetted list of flat recipients, implemented by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government, not be cancelled.

In response to questions from committee members, Minister Haidar confirmed that the government does not intend to abolish the flat list. He assured that the review process will ensure flats are allocated to the most deserving applicants.

Minister Haidar stated, “We will announce all the selected applicants and gazette the final list by the time the flats are constructed.”

He added, “I believe that the first six of the 32 towers will be completed by the end of October. Hopefully, the final list will be released by then.”

The Gedhoruveriyaa scheme involves the construction of 32 towers, each 17-18 storeys high, in Hulhumalé Phase 2. Each floor will house eight apartments, totalling 1,200 two-room apartments and 2,800 three-room apartments. The Housing Ministry previously announced that all towers are expected to be completed by mid-2025.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had halted the allocation of flats after the government released a permanent list of recipients two days before the end of former President Solih’s term. Following a two-month investigation, the ACC found that 60 percent of the 4,000 listed recipients had not met the eligibility criteria. Only 20.7 percent of the recipients were found to be without any faults, while 19.7 percent had misinformation in their forms despite meeting the criteria.

As a result, the current government formed a new committee to review the list.
