Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer has presented the 2024 estimated budget and the supplementary budget for the current year amidst disruptions from The Democrats members in today’s parliamentary session.

As Ameer initiated the budget presentation, members of The Democrats rose from their seats, attempting to impede the proceedings.

Approaching the table where Ameer was seated, Azim was met with a protective formation by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members. Despite the commotion in the background, Ameer continued with the budget presentation.

During the presentation in the House, Aslam directed the Budget Study Committee to proceed with their work. Nevertheless, members of The Democrats continued to voice their protests and shout during the proceedings.

The scheduled presentation of two budgets on the 31st of last month was obstructed by the MDP, citing the necessity of a decision on the resolution of the no-confidence motion against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed before any further work could be conducted.

According to parliamentary rules outlined in the Constitution, the finance minister is required to present the budget for the upcoming year to parliament before November 1 of that year. However, based on the advice of the Attorney General, Ameer did not attend the session.
