First Reef Fishing-Dedicated Ice Plant to be Established in Ukulhas
The agreement for the project was signed on behalf of the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources by State Minister Mohamed Muttalib, while the contract was awarded to Lhehi Construction and Trading Private Limited.
A 5-ton ice plant dedicated to reef fishing will be established in AA. Ukulhas, with the government awarding the project to a private company in a bid to improve access to ice for local fishermen.

The signing ceremony was held in Ukulhas on Tuesday night and was attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Minister Ahmed Shiyam Mohamed.

The government said the ice plant will provide reef fishermen with reliable access to fresh ice, addressing challenges faced due to limited availability on the island.
Ukulhas is known for its active reef fishing sector alongside a growing tourism industry. The government said establishing the facility is an important step towards supporting fishermen on the island.
The project is expected to be completed within five months, according to the agreement.
