Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives Iruthisham Adam has departed for India today at the invitation of India’s Minister of External Affairs Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the visit marks her first official overseas trip in her capacity as Foreign Minister.
During the visit, Minister Iruthisham is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Dr S Jaishankar in New Delhi. The meeting will provide an opportunity to review existing bilateral and multilateral cooperation between the Maldives and India and discuss issues of mutual interest.
She is accompanied by Additional Secretary Dr Ibrahim Zuhuree and Assistant Director Aminath Guraisha.
The Ministry noted that the visit follows her participation last week in the official delegation that accompanied President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on his state visit to Sri Lanka.
During that visit, the Maldives and Sri Lanka signed seven memoranda of understanding covering cooperation in tourism, archiving, education and training for teachers and school leaders, as well as sports and youth development. The two countries also renewed agreements on defence cooperation, including defence education, training, research and academic collaboration.
