Former Ministers Thoriq and Adam Appointed as Ambassadors to UAE and Qatar
Thoriq Ibrahim, who previously served as Minister of Tourism, has been appointed as Ambassador to the UAE, while Adam Shareef Umar, the former Minister of the dissolved Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, has been appointed as Ambassador to Qatar.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed former ministers Thoriq Ibrahim and Adam Shareef Umar as ambassadors to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the State of Qatar, respectively.
The credentials of the newly appointed ambassadors were presented during a ceremony held at the President’s Office this morning.
The appointments come after both officials resigned from their ministerial positions during a major restructuring of the government in April.
The restructuring followed the local council elections, where the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) lost the mayoral elections in five cities and several Women’s Development Committee (WDC) presidencies to the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
As part of the changes, the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works was dissolved, while the Ministry of Tourism and Environment was renamed the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation. Former Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen was subsequently appointed as the Minister of Tourism.
Thoriq previously served as the second Minister of Tourism since the current term of President Muizzu’s administration began in 2023.
