Former President Maumoon Urges Maldivians to Remain Steadfast in Islam

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has called on Maldivians to strengthen their commitment to Islam, describing the religion as a foundation of national identity.
Maumoon made the remarks in a video message released on social media to mark the 900th anniversary of the Maldives’ conversion to Islam.

He said Islam had endured in the Maldives for 900 years through the efforts of previous generations, and called on Maldivians to remain guided by Islamic teachings in the years ahead.
Maumoon described Islam as a national foundation and a key part of Maldivian identity.
During his 30 years in office across six presidential terms, Maumoon said his administration had focused on strengthening Islamic unity, developing mosques and educational institutions, and preventing religious discord and division in Maldivian society.
Maumoon left office on 11 November 2008, following the country’s first multi-party presidential election.
