Mohamed Nasheed, the Speaker of Parliament and former President, has officially joined The Democrats, a recently established political party in the Maldives.

Nasheed became a member of The Democrats during a special ceremony held at Artificial Beach. Alongside him, Parliamentarian Ahmed Rasheed also joined the party, bringing the total number of members in Parliament to 15.

This development follows the departure of Nasheed’s supporters from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in May. They subsequently submitted 3,560 membership applications to establish The Democrats. The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) granted approval for the party’s formation, leading to its inaugural meeting on July 5. During the meeting, party members prepared the necessary documents for party registration.

On July 12, ECM officially registered The Democrats and handed over the party registry to its founder, Hassan Latheef. The party has expressed its commitment to expanding its membership base and fielding a presidential candidate in the upcoming election.

With The Democrats now established, there are a total of ten registered political parties in the Maldives.
