Former President Mohamed Nasheed Quits MDP

Current Speaker of the Parliament and Former President Mohamed Nasheed has announced his resignation from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Nasheed expressed his belief that it was not the appropriate time for him to remain a member of the MDP, citing concerns about the current state of affairs in the country.

Following his departure from the MDP, Nasheed’s close associates reportedly approached the Election Commission to register a new political party named Democrats. While it has been revealed that the newly formed party plans to nominate a presidential candidate, there has been no confirmation as to whether Nasheed himself will be the candidate.

During a press conference held in parliament on Monday, when asked directly about the potential presidential candidacy, the party representatives refrained from providing a clear response.

The resignation of the former President from the MDP marks a significant development in Maldivian politics, as Nasheed has been a prominent figure within the party for many years. This decision has raised speculation about his future political aspirations and the potential impact it may have on the country’s political landscape.
