Former VP Adheeb Pays Remaining MVR 1 Million Fine

Former Vice President Ahmed Adheeb has paid the remaining MVR 1 million of a MVR 2 million fine imposed on him following his conviction in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption case.

Adheeb was sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined MVR 2 million after being convicted on seven counts of fraud linked to the MMPRC case. He had previously paid MVR 1 million of the fine.

The Attorney General’s Office filed a civil case against Adheeb in September last year over the unpaid MVR 1 million fine imposed in a money laundering case, in which he was sentenced to five years in prison. 

During the proceedings, Adheeb’s lawyer requested that the outstanding amount be paid in instalments, proposing an initial payment of MVR 100,000 followed by monthly payments of MVR 20,000. The Civil Court subsequently ordered him to make the advance payment and submit a formal request regarding the proposed instalment plan.

According to the Civil Court yesterday, Adheeb paid the outstanding MVR 1 million in two instalments. He paid MVR 100,000 in September last year and the remaining MVR 900,000 earlier this month.

Following the payment of the full outstanding amount, the court said the relevant sentence had been enforced and dismissed the civil case.

Adheeb was originally sentenced to 20 years in prison under a plea deal with the state. However, the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih reduced the remaining period of his sentence to four days towards the end of Solih’s presidency. Following the decision, Adheeb was released from prison.
