Four Bangladeshi Suspects Remanded in Custody Pending Trial Over Hulhumalé Abduction Case
Four Bangladeshi nationals have been ordered to remain in custody pending the conclusion of their trial in connection with the alleged abduction and assault of a fellow Bangladeshi man at a construction site in Hulhumalé.
According to the Police, the incident took place on 27 March, when the victim was allegedly kidnapped and assaulted by several compatriots at the site. The victim was later located in Vilimalé during a Police search operation.
Five Bangladeshi nationals were arrested in connection with the case: MD Sha Alam, 39, MD Mehedi Hassan, 34, MD Hossain, 30, Saafif Hassan, 38, and Rasal, 20. They face charges including unlawful detention, intimidation, kidnapping and assault.
The Police stated that during a remand hearing held on 10 April, the investigating officer informed the court that MD Hossain had caused serious physical injuries to the victim using a dangerous weapon. Stated by Police, the assault was allegedly carried out by a group, with Hossain identified as the main perpetrator.
According to the court order, Hossain initially admitted to the allegations and claimed that the altercation began after the victim refused to return passports entrusted to him. He also denied the use of a dangerous weapon and stated that the assault involved only physical force.
However, at a subsequent remand hearing held on 10 May, Hossain pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Criminal Court extended Hossain’s remand by 30 days, while the remaining four suspects were ordered to remain in custody until the end of the trial.
During the earlier hearing, MD Sha Alam told the court that although he lived at the location where the incident occurred, he did not take part in the assault or injure anyone. MD Mehedi Hassan also stated that while he was present at the scene, he did not cause any injuries. Saafif Hassan and Rasal likewise denied involvement in the assault.
Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
