Twenty people received medical care at Funadhoo Hospital following a major fire on Shaviyani Funadhoo this morning, though none sustained life-threatening injuries, a hospital media officer confirmed to MV+ today.

The blaze erupted at a harbourfront petrol shed before rapidly spreading to nearby properties, ultimately affecting four residential houses and five workshops and garages, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). One residence was severely burnt and suffered extensive structural damage, while three neighbouring homes sustained varying levels of damage from the intense heat and flames.

Emergency responders, including local police, airport fire services, and island volunteers, teamed up with a Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) unit dispatched from Kulhudhuffushi to contain the blaze. Amid intermittent secondary blasts from the site, authorities evacuated nearby residents, temporarily rehousing affected families in the area as a precautionary measure.
