The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has commenced the development of nature parks on 10 islands as part of a nationwide initiative to establish at least one nature park in every atoll.

The policy was introduced by President Mohamed Muizzu, with proposals from interested islands having been accepted since 2024.

According to the ministry, numerous submissions were received and evaluated before selecting the islands with the highest assessment scores for the first phase of development.

The selected islands are Molhadhoo, Kumundhoo, Landhoo, Huraa, Omadhoo, Kolhufushi, Kin’bidhoo, Gan, Kondey and Fiyoari.

The ministry stated that the concept and scope of each project were developed in consultation with the respective island councils. Efforts are currently under way to finalise and sign grant agreements with the councils before implementation proceeds further.

The government has previously established nature parks in areas including Fuvahmulah City and Addu City. According to the ministry, these projects have contributed to tourism development and generated broader economic benefits for local communities.
