Gov’t Allocates MVR 30 Million to Enhance Rehabilitation System

The government has announced the addition of MVR 30 million to the national budget aimed at improving the rehabilitation system.
The announcement was made during a special ceremony organised by the Drug Court last Thursday, which celebrated individuals who successfully completed their treatment under rehabilitation orders.
The ceremony was officiated by Lubna Mohamed Zahir Hussain, Chairman of the National Drug Agency board and State Minister of Homeland Security and Technology. Other notable attendees included Judicial Service Commission (JSC) President Hussain Riza Adam, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau, and several senior government officials.
In her address, Lubna highlighted the government’s commitment to strengthening the rehabilitation system with the newly allocated funds. She also called for increased support from state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in providing employment opportunities for those who have completed their treatment programs.

Chief Judge of the Drug Court, Abdul Sattar Abdul Hameed, emphasised the significant effort required to complete rehabilitation and stressed the importance of reintegrating those who have successfully overcome their challenges into society.
In the previous year, the Drug Court issued rehabilitation orders to 586 individuals. Of these, 419 completed their respective programs, while 173 violated the orders and subsequently faced sentencing.
During the ceremony, participants who successfully completed their treatment were awarded memorial certificates. Awards and certificates were also presented to the most outstanding staff members and the employee with the best attendance record. Additionally, a memorial certificate was conferred upon Ali Adeeb, a private citizen, in recognition of his contributions to the court and anti-drug initiatives.
The ceremony also marked the launch of the Drug Court’s YouTube channel, which aims to raise public awareness of the court’s initiatives.
