Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has revealed that more than 300 unregistered vehicles have been relocated to a designated site in Hulhumalé as part of ongoing efforts to address traffic congestion in Malé City.

The announcement was made during a signing ceremony with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to construct 15 new parking buildings in Hulhumalé.

Minister Ameen highlighted that, although the impact of these initiatives has yet to be fully visible due to the scale of the congestion issue, progress is underway. He noted that many vehicle owners are beginning to comply with updated registration requirements, marking an important step in raising awareness of road traffic laws. The Transport Ministry estimates that over 1,200 four-wheel vehicles remain illegally registered in Malé City.

Last month, the Ministry formalised an agreement with HDC to allocate land in Hulhumalé Phase Two, near the MACL flats, for temporary parking of unregistered vehicles in Malé and Hulhumalé. The allocated land provides vehicle owners a six-month period to complete the registration process. If vehicles are not re-registered for the Malé zone within this timeframe, they will be required to relocate to their respective registered zones.

The Ministry has clarified that the site is strictly for temporarily parking unregistered vehicles currently parked on roads or those registered outside Zone A. Vehicle owners have 40 days to move their unregistered vehicles to the designated parking area, failing which they may face police towing enforcement.
