The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy has commenced a comprehensive four-day training programme to equip government institutions and personnel with the necessary skills to manage and eradicate hazardous waste effectively.
This training initiative encompasses vital aspects such as proper disposal techniques, waste segregation methods, appropriate labelling and storage protocols, and stringent policies designed to prevent and address potential leaks of hazardous substances.
During the training programme’s inauguration ceremony, Deputy Minister Ahmed Nizam underscored the deficiencies in hazardous waste disposal mechanisms, notwithstanding the ongoing endeavours to establish state-of-the-art waste management infrastructures nationwide.
Nizam further highlighted the imminent establishment of an interim hazardous storage facility in Addu City as part of the “Eliminating Persistent Organic Pollutants through Sound Management of Chemicals” project. This initiative, financed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and executed in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP Maldives), aims to bolster environmental sustainability efforts.
