The government has begun installing a solar-diesel hybrid energy system in Dhonfanu, Baa Atoll.

The project, overseen by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, features a 301 kWp solar photovoltaic system paired with a 537.6 Wh battery energy storage system to ensure a reliable electricity supply.

By incorporating renewable energy, the initiative is expected to reduce diesel consumption by 141,443 litres annually, cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 347 tonnes per year and reducing air pollution.

The project aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s national energy policy, which aims to generate 33 per cent of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2028.

Authorities emphasise that such initiatives will not only reduce the financial burden of fossil fuel imports but also support environmental conservation amid the challenges of climate change.
