Gov’t Plans Practical Removal of Stray Cats in Male’ Streets Next Month, Says Minister
Dr Aishath Rameela, Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, has announced plans to address the stray cat population in Male’ City, aiming to begin practical removal within the next month or two.
Addressing concerns over the welfare of stray cats, Dr Rameela highlighted the aim of rescuing these animals from potential harm they face due to various factors.
The Male’ City Council took an initiative in March to establish a cat shelter facility in Hulhumale’, aimed at providing care for the feline population roaming the streets of Male’ City.
In a ceremony held at the proposed shelter site, Mayor Adam Azim and State Minister of the Ministry of Animal Welfare, Mariyam Vishama Ahmed, inaugurated the commencement of practical operations.
Mayor Azim announced that fencing works have commenced and are expected to be completed within a 20-day timeframe, with construction scheduled to begin in the upcoming week. He praised the Ministry of Animal Welfare for their comprehensive technical support in executing the project.
