Gov’t Takes Action Against Waste Crisis in Industrial Village

MV+ News Desk | May 4, 2024

Government authorities have initiated efforts to tackle the mounting issue of waste accumulation in the Industrial Village.

The site, originally established during the tenure of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, has recently become a hotspot for the dumping of various types of refuse, ranging from construction debris to household waste.

The cleanup operation, spearheaded by the Male’ City Council in conjunction with the Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), the Ministry of Housing, the Ministry of Local Government, Maldives Ports Limited, and law enforcement agencies, commenced on Saturday. This collaborative endeavour aims to alleviate the environmental and social challenges posed by the unchecked accumulation of waste in the area.

In a statement issued by the Male’ City Council, it was revealed that certain sections of the Industrial Village will be temporarily closed off following the cleanup initiative. This measure is intended to dissuade individuals from illegally disposing of large quantities of rubbish in the vicinity.

Despite its original purpose as an industrial hub, the Industrial Village has deviated from its intended function, now serving as a dumping ground for refuse. Moreover, the remote location of the area has facilitated undesirable activities such as drug abuse, prompting concerns among authorities and residents alike.

As the cleanup progresses, stakeholders are hopeful that the concerted efforts of the involved agencies will not only restore the Industrial Village to its intended purpose but also mitigate the associated environmental and social repercussions.
