Gov’t Targets Completion of Green Nursery by End of Year

The Maldivian government aims to finish construction of its primary Green Nursery facility before the end of the year, Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef announced during a press conference at the President’s Office today.

The project is part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Five Million Tree Planting Programme, which aims to replant trees and promote environmental conservation across the archipelago.

According to Minister Shareef, contractors have completed 30 per cent of the physical works on the main site since ground-breaking in January, with foundational work nearing completion. The Chinese government is providing free technical and financial assistance for the project, and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) will assume ownership and operational control of the site upon completion.

Located in Hulhumalé Phase II, the facility will span more than 55,000 square feet. Plans for the site include modern plant laboratories, educational classrooms, administrative offices, and a greenhouse. Officials intend to use the complex to run environmental awareness and educational programmes for schoolchildren alongside nursery operations.

The government also aims to expand the initiative nationwide through a network of regional facilities. Authorities have already signed agreements to establish green nurseries across 20 additional islands, with active construction and earthworks currently underway on 10 of those sites, including foundation work on R. Innamaadhoo.

Although the wider scheme set a target of planting one million trees within the current year, Minister Shareef revealed that national efforts have already surpassed expectations, with workers and community groups planting over 2.3 million trees to date.
