The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded the contract to operate the government’s environmentally friendly electric vehicle (EV) taxi service.

This 24-hour service is designed to integrate with the RTL bus system, which is also managed by MTCC. The government decided to entrust the operation of the service to a state-owned company.

A signing ceremony took place today at Meeruma Hall, where the agreement was signed by MTCC Managing Director Ahmed Saudee on behalf of the company and Director General Ahmed Shameem on behalf of the Ministry of Transport.

During the event, Minister of Transport Mohamed Ameen addressed the challenges in accessing taxi services in Malé, attributing them to the lack of a monitoring system. He stated that the government’s goal in launching the service was to strengthen taxi services rather than engage in the business itself.

Ameen explained that the service would be operated through software developed by MTCC, with passengers being assigned taxis via the system, as opposed to drivers selecting their destinations. Taxis will be available within a minute of a request.

He also noted that while taxi services are common worldwide, the government has chosen to implement the system in an environmentally friendly manner.
