Maldives Transport and Contracting Company has announced a revised strategy for the development of Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu, confirming that all remaining road segments will now be tarred simultaneously as part of the project’s final phase.

Under the original plan, asphalt works were to be completed first on Segment 5, which stretches from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the FSM Building, before work began on the remaining sections. However, with pavement works progressing on Segment 5 and significant progress reported across the other unfinished segments, MTCC has decided to proceed with a unified tarring process.

MTCC Senior Project Manager Sharvas Abdulla Faiz told Public Service Media that preparatory works on the remaining segments, including keywall construction and the installation and upgrading of water and sewerage pipelines, are nearing completion. He also noted that around 50 percent of the piling work involving 522 sheets has been completed.

According to MTCC, asphalt works on all remaining segments are expected to begin together, with plans to complete and reopen the road by next month.

The company stated that pedestrian access will remain open for most of the construction period, with temporary closures only during asphalt laying operations before the road is reopened to traffic.

The third phase of the Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu redevelopment covers Segments 2 to 5 of Phase 1, spanning approximately 700 metres from the Izzuddeen Jetty to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal. The works also include the renovation of 610 metres of seawall.

A major component of the redesign involves widening the roadway by approximately six metres to ease congestion in one of Malé’s busiest transport and service areas, which accommodates ferries, speedboats and cargo vessels.
