In a move to strengthen the Islamic Ministry’s ‘Waqf Fund,’ the government has disclosed plans for the construction of a second waqf building in Hulhumale’. Islamic Minister Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed shared on ‘X’ that the foundation for this new facility will be laid in January of the upcoming year.
This development comes six years after the inauguration of the first waqf building, Darul-Iman, situated in Maafannu. This nine-storey building has been instrumental in generating funds for mosque construction and renovation projects in Male’ and the surrounding islands.
Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who served as the Islamic Minister during the establishment of Darul-Iman, highlighted that an annual sum of MVR 6 million entered the waqf fund directly due to this building, built on Shaheem’s recommendation.
The ‘Waqf Fund’ was established by the Islamic Ministry to facilitate donations for the renovation and other needs of mosques across the country. Operating on the principles of waqf, the fund serves as a central pool of resources earmarked for the construction, renovation, and maintenance of mosques, ensuring a sustainable financial foundation for these projects.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in his election campaign, announced plans for the construction of office buildings across different islands, intended to function as additional waqf buildings.
