Hassan Latheef Elected as President of The Democrats
In the internal elections held on Saturday, Hassan Latheef, the Interim Chairperson of The Democrats, secured victory in the race for the party’s leadership.
Preliminary results, announced by Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim on behalf of The Democrats, revealed that Latheef garnered 1,704 votes, outpacing his competitor, former STO MD Hussain Amr, who received 1,300 votes.
According to Azim, The Democrats boasted a membership of 5,083 as of Saturday, with 3,209 members actively participating in the internal election, constituting 54 per cent of the total membership. This turnout marked a notable increase, representing the highest level of member participation in a political party internal election.
The internal election, conducted from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday, aimed to fill 32 positions within the party, including those of the leader and deputy leader. A total of 70 members vied for these positions.
However, the announcement of election results faced a delay, prompting some members to express their dissatisfaction on social media and raise concerns about potential alterations to the results.
Addressing the delay, The Democrats, through its official account on X, assured that the results would be announced the following day. Subsequently, Hassan Latheef declared his victory approximately an hour later, a claim contested by Hussain Amr, who asserted he was leading as per the result sheet.
In an unexpected turn of events yesterday, Amr announced his decision to refrain from commenting further on the election results.
