The High Court has overturned the four-year prison sentence handed down to former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom for bribery.

Previously, Yameen had faced more severe legal consequences, having been sentenced to 11 years in prison on December 25, 2022, for charges related to bribery and money laundering concerning the sale of V. Aarah. However, the recent ruling by the High Court brings a new development to light.

The decision regarding the bribery conviction was announced by the High Court today, following a prolonged pause in the appeal proceedings. Despite this overturning of the bribery conviction, it’s important to note that the judgement on the money laundering conviction, for which Yameen received a seven-year sentence, is still pending.

After delivering the verdict on the bribery conviction, the bench adjourned for an hour-long recess. It was announced that the bench would reconvene tonight to provide the judgement on the money laundering conviction.
