This year’s state budget has allocated around USD 14 million to provide loans to eligible students, and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced that loans will be extended to a total of 1,225 students who meet the specified criteria.
The Higher Education Loan Scheme aims to address the needs of sectors in the Maldives that require skilled professionals. The selected individuals will have the opportunity to pursue a diploma as part of their studies.
Furthermore, students who are enrolled in the government’s free degree program were allowed to apply for a loan to advance their studies in their chosen field. This initiative also provides the opportunity for the government to cover expenses that are not included in the free degree program.
The loan applications also offered students the option to apply for a top-up loan, which would cover any periods during the program where they are unable to complete their studies within the designated timeframe. Additionally, the scheme includes provisions for students interested in pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) to become college and university lecturers.
Applicants are free to choose any country for their studies, although the amount of expenses covered by the government will depend on the country in which they choose to study. Notably, the administration fee for the loan scheme has been reduced to 1%.
The publication of the final list and the inclusion of additional eligible students reflect the Ministry of Higher Education’s commitment to providing opportunities for higher education and promoting skilled workforce development in the Maldives.
