The WHO classified Mpox as a global health threat on 14 August 2024. Originating in Africa, the disease has now been detected in several Asian countries as well.
The HPA stated that since the disease began its global spread, it has been closely monitoring the situation and implementing necessary measures for the Maldives. This includes evaluating the risk of the disease entering the country and preparing for control, testing, and treatment procedures.
Additionally, the HPA is focusing on educating healthcare workers about Mpox and enhancing surveillance efforts.
Currently, no cases of Mpox have been reported in the Maldives. The virus, previously known as monkeypox, is transmitted to humans from infected animals and spreads through close physical contact between individuals.
