Health Protection Agency (HPA) has disclosed a concerning surge in mosquito-borne diseases, with 117 cases of chikungunya and 40 cases of dengue fever reported within the span of a week.

Both ailments, transmitted by bacteria-carrying mosquitoes, have witnessed an escalation in recent weeks, as indicated by statistics unveiled by the HPA. The reported cases are documented from April 28 to May 04, 2024.

The data for May alone underscores the gravity of the situation, with HPA confirming 58 instances of chikungunya and 40 cases of dengue fever recorded within the initial four days of the month. April marked the peak of the outbreak, with a total of 177 cases of chikungunya and 239 cases of dengue fever reported during the month.

Further analysis of the statistics reveals a continuous stream of dengue fever cases throughout the entirety of 2024, whereas instances of chikungunya began surfacing from March onwards, with a modest five cases documented in that month.

Notably, the concentration of reported cases appears to be disproportionately higher in the Greater Male’ Area compared to the outlying atolls.

In response to the escalating threat, both the Male’ City Council and the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) have initiated measures to combat mosquito proliferation and curb the spread of diseases. Fogging operations have been launched in the streets and public spaces of Male’ City and Hulhumale’, respectively.

In light of the situation, HPA has issued precautionary recommendations. Individuals displaying symptoms of the diseases are advised to prioritise rest, increase fluid intake, and maintain a nutritious diet. Additionally, the public is urged to utilise mosquito repellents and lotions, and to eliminate potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes by draining stagnant water.

HPA underscores the importance of seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen.
