The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has met with Housing Minister Dr. Haidar Ali to discuss concerns surrounding the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ housing scheme.

This meeting follows an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), which found that 4,000 housing units were incorrectly awarded under the scheme.

The HRCM had earlier received numerous complaints alleging rights violations related to the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme and is now examining the issue from a human rights perspective. On Thursday, the Commission reported that it had gathered pertinent information about the ongoing situation from the Housing Ministry.

According to the HRCM, the Ministry, in coordination with relevant authorities, is actively working to resolve the issue, which affects many members of the public. The Commission has expressed hope for a swift resolution.

The government is facing increasing pressure over delays in the handover of land under the ‘Binveriya’ scheme and flats under the ‘Gedhoruveriya’ scheme, both of which were initiated by the previous administration. The delays have led to several protests in Malé City.

Additionally, a petition has been submitted to Parliament requesting that the list of flat recipients from the former administration not be revoked. This petition is currently under review by Parliament’s Petition Committee.

The government has repeatedly assured that land plots and flats will be allocated to their rightful recipients.
