Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) has announced that it is seeking a company to demolish the former Thalassemia Center to make way for a new general practitioner (GP) clinic on the same site.

Interested parties that meet the necessary requirements can now submit their bids, with the bidding process scheduled for 15th January.

The three-storey building on Majeedhee Magu in Henveiru, which housed the Thalassemia Center, began operations in 1994. Due to wear and tear and capacity limitations, the building became increasingly difficult to operate efficiently, prompting the Thalassemia Center to relocate to Hulhumalé’s Orange Hiyaa last year.

The government awarded a separate project for the construction of a dedicated thalassemia hospital in Hulhumalé Phase 2 to a company last year.

The move to establish a GP clinic on the former Thalassemia Center site is part of a wider government initiative to open GP clinics across Malé, aimed at reducing queues at IGMH. The first GP clinic was opened last year next to the State Trading Organisation’s Head Office and is currently serving patients. IGMH has previously stated that three GP clinics will be established in Malé, with two additional clinics planned for Hulhumalé.
