The newly formed political party, The Democrats, has announced that MP Ilyas Habeeb is the sole candidate who has contested the presidential primary. Following in the footsteps of former President and Speaker of Majlis Mohamed Nasheed, the party commenced the presidential primary process on last Thursday.

The deadline for applications from potential candidates expired at 4:00 pm yesterday, and Ilyas submitted his nomination forms at the Democrats’ office by 1:00 pm on the same day.

According to the party’s constitution, in the event of a solitary candidate vying for the presidential position, a discreet vote is required among the members. As per the constitutional mandate, if a candidate manages to secure 10 percent of the member votes, they will be declared the official presidential candidate.

Despite his recent affiliation with the party, Nasheed has openly stated his lack of interest in partaking in the presidential primary, effectively ruling out his inclusion in the presidential election.

Looking ahead, the Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has open the nomination period for this year’s presidential election, allowing potential candidates to submit their nominations from today until the 7th of next month.
