Party Senator Maleeh Jamal of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has been suspended over allegations of causing disruption within the party.

Maleeh, however, remains undeterred, asserting that he is carrying out his actions under the direct instructions of Former President Yameen.

Maleeh took the lead in an emergency press conference on behalf of the PPM, revealing that Former President Yameen had established a 13-member committee to oversee the party’s affairs.

The suspension came after two vice-presidents of the PPM, Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon and Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam, signed a letter addressed to the parliament.

The letter accused Maleeh of attempting to sow division within the party, prompting his suspension from party activities effective immediately. The case has been referred to the party’s ethics committee.

Responding to the accusations, Maleeh countered that the two ministers took action against him to protect their positions, emphasising that such a move is not in line with the party’s constitution.

Maleeh defended his actions at the press conference, stating that Former President Yameen had appointed the committee due to the overwhelming messages from ordinary party members.

Handling the sheer volume of messages required the formation of a committee, he explained.

Maleeh also raised concerns about President Muizzu and Presidential Special Advisor Abdul Raheem Abdullah’s statement that no PPM member would be admitted to the People’s National Congress (PNC).

Additionally, he expressed apprehension about the opening of a separate office for the PNC within the PPM premises, a matter that has been a longstanding issue.
