Immigration Amends Passport Issuance Procedures Amid Shortage of Passport Booklets

Maldives Immigration has introduced temporary changes to passport issuance after the German company supplying passport booklets reported difficulties in replenishing stocks due to issues with its printing machines.

Immigration said the supplier is currently unable to meet the government’s required supply and can only provide passport booklets until next month. The department said the changes have therefore been introduced to ensure passport services can continue without disrupting international travel.

Under the revised arrangement, Maldivians renewing passports within the country will have the validity of their existing passport booklet extended until 30 June 2027, without any additional fee, instead of being issued a new booklet.

For first-time passport applicants travelling to commonly visited destinations such as India and Sri Lanka, Immigration will issue an emergency passport valid for one year.

Immigration has assured the public that the temporary measures will not create obstacles for Maldivians travelling abroad. The department said the arrangements have been introduced solely due to the temporary shortage of passport booklets.
