Couple arrested on drug smuggling suspicion in Maldives

An Indian couple has been arrested on suspicion of attempting to smuggle drugs into the Maldives, in a case currently under investigation by authorities.

The suspects have been identified as Imran Pasha, 33, and his wife Kris Ambrosia, 27. The Maldives Police Service has accused the pair of smuggling, distributing and trafficking drugs.

The Criminal Court of the Maldives has ordered both individuals to be held in remand for 30 days. According to the court order, authorities discovered 2.4 kilograms of suspected narcotics concealed in their luggage.

The arrest follows a recent case involving another Indian couple who were detained after being found in possession of approximately six kilograms of drugs, highlighting ongoing concerns over drug smuggling into the country.

Under the Narcotic Drugs Act, the import, export or attempted movement of controlled substances is classified as a serious criminal offence. The law strictly prohibits the movement of such substances across national borders.

The statutory penalty for drug importation includes life imprisonment and a fine ranging from MVR 100,000 to MVR 10,000,000. Where the quantity of drugs exceeds thresholds set by law, it is presumed to be intended for trafficking. For instance, importing more than four grams of substances listed under Schedule 1, including heroin or diamorphine, constitutes a trafficking offence and carries a mandatory life sentence.

The legislation also stipulates that planning, participating in, or assisting in drug importation carries the same legal responsibility and penalties as committing the offence itself.
