Judicial Staff Regulations Revised to Allow Political Participation

MV+ News Desk | June 17, 2023

In a recent development, the ‘Judicial Staff Regulations’ have undergone revisions, with the chapter prohibiting participation in political activities being removed from the regulations. Instead, this prohibition has been incorporated into the ‘Code of Conduct’ for judicial staff.

This change aims to enable members of the judiciary to become involved in political parties and engage with politically active associations.

Released last Thursday, the Code of Conduct for Judicial Staff introduces a series of modifications to the existing Judicial Staff Rules. Several chapters and provisions have been repealed, while others have been amended to align with the new guidelines.

The newly enforced Code of Conduct now includes specific regulations pertaining to participation in political activities. These guidelines are placed under the section titled ‘Maintaining the Independence and Integrity of the Judiciary.’

The section explicitly states that no judicial employee should engage in any action that may raise doubts about the integrity of the judiciary. Furthermore, they are expected to abstain from any behavior that could undermine the independence of the judiciary or erode public confidence in its functioning.
