Large Quantity of Cigarettes Seized at Gan International Airport

The Maldives Customs Service has seized over 130,000 cigarettes that were smuggled into the country through Gan International Airport.

According to Customs, a total of 130,155 cigarettes—equivalent to around 650 cartons—were discovered hidden during an operation conducted yesterday. The estimated value of the seized cigarettes is approximately MVR 1.5 million, based on current market prices in the Maldives.

While authorities have not confirmed any arrests in connection with the case, Customs stated that those found guilty in such cases are typically fined.

There has been an increase in cigarette smuggling attempts in recent months. This follows the government’s decision to raise taxes on tobacco products as part of its broader efforts to reduce tobacco use.
