The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has begun stakeholder familiarisation tours at Velana International Airport (VIA) in preparation for the opening of the new passenger terminal, scheduled for next month.

The initiative is part of MACL’s broader efforts to introduce upgraded airport facilities and enhance service delivery. As part of the familiarisation process, staff from Island Aviation visited the terminal to assess passenger flow and inspect key operational areas, including check-in, boarding, and baggage handling systems.

During the Aviation Forum held at Hulhule’ Island Hotel, MACL’s Chief Technology Officer, Shafeez Ahmed, described the scheduled 26 July opening of the terminal as a significant milestone in the company’s commitment to improving airport infrastructure and services.

The new terminal will incorporate a range of modern features, including self-check-in kiosks, automated baggage drop counters, and an advanced baggage handling system.

The terminal will initially operate with six aerobridges and is expected to take over all services currently handled by the existing terminal within three months of its opening.

The terminal development project is funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), with financial support secured through USD 100 million (MVR 1.5 billion) from the Saudi Fund, along with an additional USD 80 million (MVR 1.2 billion). The total cost of the project is projected to reach MVR 7 billion.
