The People’s Majlis has opened a public consultation on the Cyber Security Bill, allowing individuals and organisations to submit feedback on proposed legislation aimed at strengthening the Maldives’ cyber security framework and improving safety in the digital space.

The bill is currently under review by the Parliament’s Information and Communication Technology Committee. It forms part of the government’s legislative efforts to address online threats, including cyber scams, cyberbullying and other malicious digital activities.

Parliament has set 1 July as the deadline for submitting comments. The Secretariat of the People’s Majlis has requested that submissions be sent either by email to the committee’s official address or delivered in writing to the parliamentary secretariat.

The Cyber Security Bill is intended to strengthen national capacity to respond to cyber threats and regulate digital safety mechanisms in the country.

The government has also submitted the “Maldives 2.0” Digital Transformation Bill to the parliament, setting out plans to establish a unified digital governance system for state services. The Cyber Security Bill is expected to reinforce the security of the digital economy promised with the Maldives 2.0 digital transformation project.

President Mohamed Muizzu initially announced the idea of Maldives 2.0 in 2024.
