Home Land Security, Labour and Technology Minister Ali Ihusaan has said a registry of employers is being developed as part of the government’s Maldives 2.0 initiative.

Speaking on the Public Service Media programme Raajje Miadhu, Minister Ihusaan said the Maldives 2.0 system would allow all government data systems to be interconnected, eliminating the need for documents issued by one government agency to be submitted again to another agency.

He said the new system is intended to simplify access to services for foreigners living and working in the Maldives, with identity verification expected to take place instantly for individuals who comply with regulations.

According to the minister, authorities are currently preparing a system-wide database of employers. Once completed, service requests submitted to the ministry and related institutions would be processed automatically through the Maldives 2.0 platform.

Minister Ihusaan said the government was working towards a system where companies that are properly registered, paying taxes and operating in compliance with regulations would have their service requests automatically approved through the digital platform.

He also said the government aimed to address issues related to migrant workers by incorporating legal standards used in other countries. The target is to reduce the number of undocumented foreigners and unregistered employers in the Maldives to one percent by 17 November this year.

The minister added that the government intends for the Maldives to become one of the leading countries globally in the treatment of expatriate workers in line with international standards by the end of the current administration’s five-year term.
