Maldives and China Launch Two-Day Workshop on Fisheries and Blue Economy

The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources has officially launched a two-day technical workshop today, focusing on fisheries management and the blue economy.
The workshop was opened by Minister Ahmed Shiyam alongside the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives, Kong Xianhua.

Organised by the Ministry in collaboration with Hainan University in China, the initiative brings together key Maldivian state entities, marine research bodies, and educational institutions. Delegates from the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy, the Environmental Regulatory Authority, the Maldives Marine Research Institute, the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company, the Maldives National University, and Villa International High School are attending the sessions.
The bilateral training focuses on three central themes:
- Sustainable fishery resource management and biodiversity conservation
- Tropical aquaculture and climate-adaptive technologies
- Coral reef restoration
The Ministry notes that the aim of the workshop is to support sustainable management of the country’s marine resources and lay the ground for lasting collaboration by bringing Maldivian institutions together with Chinese researchers.
