Maldives and Japan Discuss Expanded Environmental Cooperation

The Maldives and Japan are seeking to expand bilateral cooperation on climate resilience, environmental protection and sustainable resource management as climate-related pressures continue to affect island communities.

The areas were discussed during a meeting between Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef and Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives Ishigami Rumiko.

Discussions focused on opportunities for joint initiatives in climate change adaptation, environmental conservation and sustainable environmental management. The two sides also exchanged views on other areas that could further strengthen relations between the countries.

Expanded cooperation could support the Maldives in improving its resilience to climate risks while advancing national environmental priorities through technical assistance, expertise and development partnerships.

Japan has been a longstanding development partner of the Maldives and has provided assistance across several sectors, including environmental protection and climate change-related programmes.
