Minister Shiham met with Mr. Pio Smith, UNFPA’s Asia-Pacific Regional Director, to explore opportunities for collaboration and shared interests. The Minister conveyed her gratitude for the UNFPA’s support, which contributes to population-related initiatives.
The visit also included Dr. Shiham’s participation in a high-level panel discussion on “Reframing Ageing” at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Population Ageing in India. At the conference, which hosted over 400 delegates from various countries, the Minister highlighted the demographic changes in the Maldives and their implications for sustainable development. The discussion emphasised the Maldives’ commitment to addressing the challenges of an ageing population by turning them into opportunities for inclusive growth and resilience.
Additionally, Dr. Shiham visited the LLT Girang Melinggih elderly care facility in Indonesia. The facility, which promotes active ageing through monthly activities, also supports local seniors by facilitating access to social protection programs, healthcare services, and assistive devices. The centre further aids in the creation and sale of traditional handicrafts made by older adults in the community.
