Maldives has assumed the chairmanship of the Coalition of Atoll Nations on Climate Change (CANCC) during the 28th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, COP28 in Dubai, UAE. The event, presided over by Minister of Climate Change, Environment, and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim, focused on addressing the challenges confronted by small and low lying island nations in combating climate change.

CANCC comprises five member provinces, namely Kiribati, Maldives, the Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, and Tokelau, uniting to collaboratively tackle the unique challenges posed by climate change. The group aims to advocate for the vulnerable position of such nations and work towards practical solutions.

Thoriq, as the chair of CANCC, emphasized the susceptibility of provincial countries to climate change. He highlighted the environmental issues arising from their geographical and structural characteristics.

Thoriq further delved into potential measures for climate change adaptation, damage reduction, and compensation for irreparable harm. Stressing the significance of sharing best practices, he underscored the importance of solidarity among provincial countries in addressing these shared concerns.
