Maldives Discontinues Work Visa Conversions for Business Visa Holders

Foreign nationals entering the Maldives on Business or Special Visas can no longer convert their immigration status to a Work Visa, under a restriction introduced by the Ministry of Homeland Security.
The Ministry said Business Visas are intended for foreign professionals undertaking short-term business activities. However, some employers have reportedly used the category to bring workers into the country before seeking Work Visas for them through an expedited process.

The restriction took effect immediately and prevents individuals who entered under either visa category from applying for work permits through the Xpat System.
“For the information of all employers, we advise that individuals who have entered the Maldives on these visas will not be able to apply for a work permit through the ‘Xpat System’,” the announcement read.
The measure comes amid wider government efforts to address undocumented expatriate workers. Deportations are underway following the expiry of a deadline for expatriates to submit biometric information and regularise their status.
The Home Ministry has previously stated that the current administration has deported more than 12,000 people who were residing in the Maldives illegally.
